Chin augmentation is one of the most effective solutions for achieving a more balanced and harmonious facial profile, especially for those who wish to correct a short or receding chin. In Vietnam, this procedure is well-developed with advanced techniques and safe materials that deliver natural, long-lasting results. Let’s explore the detailed process, advantages and disadvantages, costs, and important considerations to help you feel more confident when choosing to enhance your beauty in Vietnam!

What is chin augmentation surgery?

Chin augmentation surgery is a cosmetic procedure that enhances or lengthens the chin by placing an implant into the chin area, helping to create a more balanced and harmonious facial contour.

The most common method uses a medical-grade silicone implant, custom-shaped to fit your facial proportions, inserted through a small incision inside the mouth or under the chin. Alternatively, you may choose autologous chin augmentation, using cartilage or bone from your own body (such as the ear, rib, or jawbone).

For those who are afraid of surgery or unsure about their ideal chin shape, filler injections can be a temporary alternative. This non-surgical option uses hyaluronic acid-based fillers to reshape the chin, with results lasting around 12–24 months, enough time to decide whether to proceed with a permanent surgical enhancement.

Chin augmentation surgery uses either artificial or autologous materials to enhance the shape and proportion of the face.

The pros and cons of chin augmentation surgery

Although chin augmentation surgery in Vietnam is widely regarded for its safety and effectiveness, it still comes with certain limitations. Let’s take a closer look at the details to help you make the most informed decision before undergoing the procedure.

Pros

  • Chin augmentation surgery delivers outstanding aesthetic results, helping the face achieve the golden ratio with a graceful V-line in just 1–2 weeks of recovery.
  • Modern chin augmentation techniques use highly biocompatible materials, minimizing the risk of rejection and maintaining permanent results without the need for additional procedures.
  • The procedure is quick, allowing patients to be discharged early and return to normal activities within 3–5 days.
  • In Vietnam, the cost of a procedure is only about 1/3–1/5 of that in the US or South Korea (around 1,500–3,000 USD depending on the material), while still being performed by highly skilled and experienced surgeons at major hospitals. 3D technology is also applied for personalized implant design.
High-quality, biocompatible chin implants help ensure safety and minimize the risk of rejection, providing long-lasting and natural-looking results.

Cons

  • Although highly safe, chin augmentation surgery still carries risks such as infection, implant displacement, or temporary numbness in the chin lasting 2–4 weeks.
  • Using low-quality silicone may cause inflammation or implant exposure over time.
  • You should also be prepared for pain, swelling, and difficulty chewing hard foods during the first 7–10 days.

In general, most complications after chin augmentation are caused by untrustworthy clinics or insufficiently skilled surgeons. Therefore, you should carefully choose a certified hospital that meets Ministry of Health standards to ensure safety.

How much does chin augmentation cost?

The cost of chin augmentation surgery in Vietnam ranges flexibly from 18–48 million VND (approximately 700–1,900 USD). This price is also influenced by several factors such as:

  • Type of implant material;
  • Surgical technique;
  • Surgeon’s skill and experience;
  • Reputable facility certified by the Ministry of Health;
  • Your specific chin condition (mild receding or requiring complex correction).

With prices only 1/3–1/5 of those in South Korea or the US, this is a golden opportunity for international visitors. However, to know the exact cost of your chin augmentation, consult directly with a surgeon to receive a detailed quotation and surgical plan.

Chin augmentation surgery procedure

Chin augmentation surgery performed to international standards usually takes about 45 to 90 minutes and includes 6 main steps:

Step 1: Consultation & 3D design

Surgeons will perform a general examination, take X-rays, and 3D scan your face to measure the golden ratio, then choose the appropriate size and shape of the implant material (silicone, Medpor, or autologous cartilage).

Step 2: Health check

Blood tests, cardiovascular assessment, and drug allergy tests are performed. You will also be advised to stop taking medications containing blood thinners about 7–10 days before surgery.

Step 3: Anesthesia

The surgeon will assess your health and the level of intervention to choose between local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Anti-swelling medication will also be administered during and after the procedure.

Step 4: Incision & implant placement

The surgeon will make incisions and place the implant according to the pre-surgery plan discussed with you. There are three main incision and implant placement techniques:

  • Intraoral (no external scar): A 1–1.5 cm incision is made on the lower lip mucosa.
  • Submental (hidden scar): A 1 cm incision is made under the natural chin crease.
  • The subperiosteal pocket is created, and the implant is secured with titanium screws or sutured to the muscles.

Step 5: Closing the incision

The surgical wound is closed with absorbable sutures (for intraoral incisions) or 6.0 sutures (for submental incisions, removed on days 5–7).

Step 6: Postoperative care & discharge

Postoperative care is very important. You will be instructed to apply gentle ice compresses for about 48 hours to reduce pain and swelling. Antibiotics should be taken for 5 days, and follow-up visits are required on days 3, 5, and 7. After 2–4 hours of observation at the hospital, you will be discharged and continue care at home.

Is chin augmentation painful?

As mentioned, during the surgery, there is always a step of local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Therefore, you will feel completely comfortable and may even sleep during the 45–90 minute procedure. The only sensation might be a slight pressure when the surgeon creates the pocket for the implant – similar to having a tooth extracted at the dentist.

6–8 hours after surgery, when the anesthesia wears off, you may feel mild pain at a level of 2–4/10, which can be controlled with 500 mg of paracetamol every 6–8 hours during the first 2–3 days.

By the third day, swelling will reach its peak, and you may also feel numbness in the chin area for 2 to 4 weeks. Do not worry, this is a normal reaction of the sensory nerves and will return to normal after recovery.

In addition, the incision inside the mouth may cause some discomfort when chewing harder foods compared to the area under the chin. You should continue gentle ice compresses for 48 hours and prioritize soft foods to reduce discomfort.

Your pain sensation will change and gradually decrease through each stage.

Notes after chin augmentation surgery

After chin augmentation surgery, you need to strictly follow the care regimen at each stage to recover quickly and achieve the best results. Here are the stages and specific care instructions for your reference:

  • First 48 Hours (Peak Swelling Stage): During this stage, reduce swelling and prevent infection by applying ice packs for 15 minutes at a time, 4–6 times a day, and sleep with your head elevated 30–45° to promote blood circulation. Take antibiotics and painkillers as prescribed. Avoid vigorous mouth rinsing if the incision is inside the mouth to prevent suture loosening. Consume only cool, liquid foods (milk, thin porridge, smoothies) through a straw, and avoid hot, spicy, or sour foods.
  • Days 3–7 (Stabilization Stage): Swelling should decrease by about 50–70%. Switch to warm compresses to help absorb bruising. Rinse your mouth with 0.9% saline after meals, avoid wide smiling or yawning to protect the implant area. If the chin implant was placed via an external incision, return to have stitches removed. You can start eating soft foods (mashed rice, noodles, mashed potatoes) and avoid chewing gum or hard foods for 2 weeks.
  • 2 Weeks – 1 Month (Shaping Stage): The chin now looks more natural, but avoid strong impacts, facial massages, or sleeping on your stomach. Keep up with scheduled follow-ups so the surgeon can check implant adhesion. Light makeup is allowed, but limit alcohol and smoking to prevent chronic inflammation.
  • 1–3 Months (Finalizing Stage): Results become more defined. You may resume light exercise but avoid overexertion. Protect your skin outdoors with sunscreen, scarves, hats, or masks to prevent hyperpigmentation at the surgical site.
Postoperative care instructions must be strictly followed.
